Griffith University Art Museum (GUAM) was delighted to present ‘Tim Page: The very edge of the brightest light’ from 1 June to 1 August 2026.
Curated by Carrie McCarthy (GUAM) and Dr Amy Carkeek (QCAD), the exhibition comprises almost 70 photographic works from the Griffith University Art Collection, as well as ephemera and objects from the artist’s extensive archive, offering a new perspective on the acclaimed photographer.
The exhibition includes several of his iconic war photographs but also focuses on his work from the 1980s to 2000s, when Page returned regularly to the locations of his past assignments to highlight the people and places left victim to manmade disasters and to emphasise the futility of war. The images taken during this time are some of the most compelling and empathetic of Page’s career.
In an era saturated with images of conflict, ‘Tim Page: The very edge of the brightest light’ is a reminder of the affecting power of photography and how, despite being regarded as one of the world’s leading documenters of war and conflict, Page’s archive reveals a commitment to highlighting injustice and being a strong voice for peace.
GUAM hosted a series of public programs including a free opening celebration on the 4th of June and a closing weekend Photojournalism Symposium with speakers Barat Ali Batoor, Marianne (Mau) Harris, and Griffith University academics Dr Chari Larsson (QCAD), Dr Miriam Deprez (Disrupting Violence Beacon) and Dr Samid Suliman (Griffith Centre for Social and Cultural Research).
Project Personnel and Beneficiaries
GUAM is open to all members of the public who are invited to view and learn from ‘Tim Page: The very edge of the brightest light’ during GUAMs regular opening hours.
High School tours and tours for QCAD students were held throughout the exhibition.
GUAM hosted a series of public programs including a free opening celebration on the 4th of June with guest speaker Simon Wright (Assistant Director, QAGOMA) and a closing weekend Photojournalism Symposium with speakers Barat Ali Batoor, Ben Bohane, Sasha Constable, Sarah George, Marianne (Mau) Harris, JP Willis, and Griffith University academics Dr Chari Larsson (QCAD), Dr Miriam Deprez (Disrupting Violence Beacon), Dr Samid Suliman (Director International, AEL Dean (Academic)) and Dr Kasun Ubayasiri (School of Humanities, Languages and Social Science).
Outcomes to Date
The exhibition concluded in August 2026 with over 20994 local, state, national and international visitors.
Several QCAD courses incorporated the exhibition into coursework and assessment, with student tours and lectures facilitated by GUAM staff throughout the exhibition’s duration.
The exhibition will tour nationally from 2027-2030.
Project Significance
All of GUAM’s exhibitions are free, accessible, open to the public and contribute to SDG 4 ‘Quality Education’ and SDG 11 ‘Sustainable Cities and Communities’ particularly 11.2.3 ‘Public access to museums’.
GUAM also created new and strengthened existing relationships with internal and external stakeholders, including: QCAD, Disrupting Violence Beacon, School of Humanities, Languages and Social Sciences, Griffith Centre for Social and Cultural Research, QAGOMA, Mau Harris and the Asylum Seeker Research Centre.
This exhibition and the photographic work of Tim Page particularly contributed to Griffith Universitys commitment to SGDs: SDG 1 (No poverty), SDG 2 (Zero hunger), SDG 3 (Good health and well-being), SDG 5 (Gender equality), SDG 6 (Clean water and sanitation), SDG 8 (Decent work and economic growth), SDG 10 (Reduced inequalities), SDG 15 (Life on land), SDG 16 (Peace, justice, and strong institutions) and SDG 17 (Partnerships for the goals).
