Project Description
24/7 Respect – Respect at Work. This project provides academic knowledge and metrics to support the development of 24/7 Respect, a Hastings Deering’s program tackling bullying, discrimination and harassment to promote better workplaces, comply with new psychological safety legislation and improve employee retention. This project aims to encompass an approach that acknowledges employees professional and personal lives are interrelated. Understanding respect and issues of abuse, violence, and harassment can positively impact on employees personal and family lives and community functioning, as experiences of abuse in those areas can affect work life. This project further acknowledges the role that companies can take in contributing to safer communities more broadly. This project is in collaboration with Hastings Deering.
Project Personnel and Beneficiaries
The project engages with workers in all spaces of the company, their families and surrounding communities. Once 24/7 respect is fully implemented and properly evaluated and improved sufficiently to deliver the outcomes measured, this is a project that can benefit the company’s goals while also enhancing workers’ wellbeing, the wellbeing and safety of their families and of the surrounding community. Measurable positive community impact that feedback into a positive workplace is a key goal of this project.
Outcomes to Date
The project is divided in three stages and only one stage has been finalised. At this moment the project has been successful in mapping the company’s strengths and capacity for implementation of a project in the area of violence prevention and wellbeing. The team is now refining metric selection for field work. This process however has already assisted the company to better evaluate their approach to psychosocial hazards and it has contributed already for a strong buy in to our project from all levels in such a large and diverse company. Now we have a company engaged and interested in this process of change and where employees are informed and interested in the research that support their change model. This is fundamental for all SDGs and it already puts the team in a good position to start tackling SDG 3 and SDG 9.
Project Significance
By sharing academic knowledge, assisting on measuring the impact of 24/7 Respect, and mapping its implementation, this research project directly contributes to provide the industry with best practices frameworks while assisting on their adaptation to that workplace. The project directly measures impact in SDGs such as good health and well-being, gender equality, decent work (retention and satisfaction), and reduced inequalities, while at the same time it incorporates in its framework the values of sustainable communities. The engagement of companies in the space of violence prevention promotes important innovation in industry.
