r e a: NATIVE

Griffith University Art Museum

Project Description

From 6 June – 3 August 2024, Griffith University Art Museum hosted ‘r e a: NATIVE’ comprising two interrelated installations delving into the historical and colonial archive.

This exhibition coincided with the International Symposium on Electronic Art (ISEA) which brings together artists, scientists and scholars from around the world to explore the intersection of art, science and technology in Brisbane from 21-29 June 2024. This 2024 conference theme, Everywhen, explores the human perception of space and time. This word describes the notion that past, present and future are co-habiting in any given location.

GUAM produced the first monograph of r e a’s career with contributions from Franchesca Hebert-Spence, Anne Marsh and exhibition curator Angela Goddard accompanied this exhibition.

Project Personnel and Beneficiaries

GUAM is open to all members of the public who are invited to view and learn from every exhibition during GUAMs regular opening hours. School tours and tours for QCAD students were held and a free public opening celebration was held at GUAM in conjunction with ISEA 2024 on the 26 June 2024 with over 400 attendees.

r e a also hosted a number of artist talks in Brisbane and with QCAD students.

Outcomes to Date

Over 1200 local, state, national and international visitors attended ‘r e a: NATIVE’ at Griffith University Art Museum.

Project Significance

All of GUAM’s exhibitions are free, accessible, open to the public and contribute to SDG 4 ‘Quality Education’ and SDG 11 ‘Sustainable Cities and Communities’ particularly 11.2.3 ‘Public access to museums’.

For ‘r e a: NATIVE’ we are recording and preserving cultural heritage through the new publication and facilitating conversations as a venue for the 2024 ISEA conference.
