A/Prof Kate van Doore

Please note that this is an on-going project.

Project Description

Orphanage Trafficking, in which children are recruited and trafficked into institutions for the purpose of financial profit and other forms of exploitation, is a form of institution-related trafficking of children.

This Roundtable, organised by CPA UK in partnership with the BGIPU, the OSCE and Griffith University from Brisbane, aimed to raise awareness about the prevalence of orphanage trafficking worldwide. The discussion examined the underlying supply and demand nexus contributing to the phenomenon of orphanage trafficking, and the impact of orphanage trafficking on children.

Project Personnel and Beneficiaries

The Roundtable was co-sponsored by the Law Futures Centre, Griffith University, the OSCE (Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe – representing 57 countries), the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association UK (representing 60 countries) and the Inter-Parliamentary Union UK (representing 189 parliaments).

Outcomes to Date

The roundtable showcased successful interventions and best practices in combating the issue and suggested concrete steps to allow parliamentary action against orphanage trafficking.

Project Significance

This roundtable directly interacts with SDG 8.7 and 16.2.2 which call for action on eliminating trafficking and exploitation of children.
