Griffith University supports the Sustainable Development Goals

Containers for Change

Dr Saffron Benner

Please note that this is an on-going project.

Project Description

Late in 2022, Griffith University launched a new Containers for Change collection program across its Nathan and Gold Coast campuses. Each bottle donated through the Containers for Change collection bins will raise funds for Griffith’s Brighter Futures Scholarship Program.

Project Personnel and Beneficiaries

The project is a collaboration between Campus Life, Office of Advancement and the Sustainability Office.

Outcomes to Date

By the end of October, more than $160,000 had already been donated by staff in 2022, providing funding for at least 64 Brighter Futures scholarships for 2023, with two months of the year to go.

Project Significance

More than 900,000 tonnes of carbon emissions have been saved thanks to the more than 6 billion containers returned through the Containers for Change program, as the recycled materials replace newly manufactured materials. With more than 55,000 students across the Griffith campuses donation bins have a huge potential to save thousands of containers that might have ended up as litter or landfill and support students to achieve their academic potential.
