Project Description
Future leaders in Indonesia’s film industry joined Course Leaders Dr Dean Chircop, Associate Professor Maragret McVeigh and Ms Martha Goddard for the short course aimed at promoting Indonesia’s creative industry for economic growth, strengthening participants’ skills in content creation, screenwriting, directing, and producing visual media projects.
Key learning objectives included understanding the Australian film sector, developing screenwriting and production skills, pitching concepts, improving creative writing, applying feedback, enhancing communication and negotiation abilities, and developing project management skills. Participants also met with industry leaders to discuss the economic impact of the film sector and build industry connections.
The program offered a hands-on, immersive experience at Griffith University’s Film School, featuring scene shooting in state-of-the-art studios, interactions with industry experts, pitching opportunities, and site visits to renowned film studios.
Project Personnel and Beneficiaries
The participant’s represented a cross-section of Indonesia’s film sector, including professionals from Jakarta, Yogyakarta, Denpasar and other regions, covering both urban creative hubs and emerging media centres.
While in Australia, participants met with industry professionals including Village Roadshow Studios, QAGOMA (Gallery of Modern Art), Myriad Studios VFX & Cyber Scanning and Cutting Edge Post (Gold Coast). Access to site visits and speakers gave participants a new understanding of the growing Australian film industry and lessons that can be applied in Indonesia.
Outcomes to Date
As part of the course, participants developed Award Projects based on their learning outcomes, which were reviewed and refined throughout the program. They presented their promotional materials, finance plans, funding strategies, and pitched their script concepts. The presentations demonstrated high quality, clear communication, strong timing, and creative innovation, reflecting the skills gained during the In-Australia program. Since the course concluded, many projects have continued to progress, with some featured in festivals or entering distribution negotiations.
Project Significance
The Short Course primarily contribute to SDG 8 ‘Decent work and economic growth’ by promoting Indonesia’s creative industry for economic growth, strengthening participants’ skills in content creation, screenwriting, directing, and producing visual media projects. Learning objectives included:
– Learn about the Australian film sector
– Develop an understanding of screenwriting, direction and film production
– Develop and pitch structured and engaging concepts
– Develop skills in concept, structure, story and character development
– Apply creative writing and critical thinking skills in collaborative crafting
– Apply constructive feedback to improve a screenplay
– Develop effective communication and negotiation skills in the direction and production of a film
– Apply effective project management and team-work skills within a major role in the production and post- production of a film project
– Use appropriate technologies and media to effectively gather and synthesise information
– Assess the economic impact of the film sector and compare initiatives to boost the sector’s economic output
– Build networks with the Australian film industry, leverage industry links and explore future collaboration
