Switch Your Fish (A social marketing approach to reduce the recreational harvest of snapper and pearl perch in Queensland)

Professor Sharyn Rundle-Thiele

Project Description

Switch Your Fish was a short campaign to challenge recreational fishers on the Sunshine Coast to enjoy a different range of fish to eat. The different species were Mahi Mahi, Cobia, and Amberjack; and the campaign was designed to take the pressure off other species including Snapper and Pearl Perch.

Project Personnel and Beneficiaries

Recreational Fishers, Charter Boat operators, Fishing Clubs, Restaurants, Scientists, Fishing Media, Bait and tackle retailers and others.

Outcomes to Date

Fishers increased their catch of the target species during the campaign period. The campaign reached its target audience and influenced them through the support of local, influential recreational fishers. No noticeable reductions in the recreational catch of Snapper and/or Pearl Perch was observed.

Project Significance

Switch Your Fish was part of the Fishing for Change project. The underlying aim of the project was to work with recreational fishers in Queensland and others with an interest in recreational fishing to find ways to reduce recreational fishing pressure on snapper and pearl perch fisheries.
