Griffith Green Impact Program – Early Education Centre

Project Description

2022 is Griffith University’s inaugural year joining thirteen other universities and a growing number of organisations across Australia and New Zealand participating in Green Impact.

Green Impact was developed by the National Union of Students (NUS) in the UK, where it has run for over 14years and reached more han 340’000 people. The program aligns with the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals.

At Griffith, staff and relevant student teams can participate by choosing actions from an interactive online list, created specifically for Griffith University, and centered on themes including biodiversity, climate action, diversity & inclusion, energy, health & wellbeing, waste & recycling and water.

The Boronia and Tallowwood Early Education Centre, led by Director Ruth Simpkins, was the first Griffith Green Impact team to enrol in the program to embrace sustainable actions.

Project Personnel and Beneficiaries

Griffith Green Impact is run through Griffith Sustainability, and in Australasia, is supported by Australian Campuses Towards Sustainability (ACTS).

Outcomes to Date

Since the 2022 launch, Griffith already has 10 teams who have registered and have started to make positive changes to their daily habits and are encouraging colleagues and fellow students to do the same.

At the Early Childcare Centre, the program is assisting the Centre to continue the conversation with staff and assist with further developing sustainable initiatives with a positive influence on the children, their families and the wider community

Project Significance

Griffith Green Impact provides teams within the Griffith community the opportunity to take part in a fun and dynamic program that progresses the sustainability goals of the university, encourages teams to take real work actions to make a difference, and learn more about social, health and environmental issues.

The Early Childhood Centre recycles multiple streams and is always looking at ways to minimise waste ending up in landfill. The children at the Centre also learn and experience growing their own food, composting food scraps and the value and purpose of composting for their garden. The initiative has created a ripple effect with children continuing conversations with their families and encouraging them to take up sustainability initiatives at home.
