Griffith University supports the Sustainable Development Goals

Chiller Plant West (N80) supporting Griffith’s carbon reduction

Holly Ruhle

Project Description

Completion of the Chiller Plant West (N80) facility on Nathan campus was finalised in March 2022, the culmination of works since 2019 to replace the existing Central Chiller Plant (N45). The new facility services the entirety of the Nathan campus (excluding N78 and N79 which have their own dedicated systems.

The plant provides a centralised system that provides chilled water to cool the air for a building/collection of building and provides the air-conditioning portion of HVAC systems.

During the early design process, commencing in 2018, the campus life team considered best practice approaches to environmental design, renewable energy and water smart solutions for the goal of supporting Griffith’s Strategic Plan targets to reduce carbon emissions by 50% compared to 2010, as well as maximise energy efficiency.

Project Personnel and Beneficiaries

Outcomes to Date

Final completion of the project in March 2022

Project Significance

The university has a carbon target to reduce its scope 1 and 2 emissions by 2030 which equates to a target of 107kg CO2-e/m2 Gross Floor Area (GFA) across the whole range of university buildings. The potential for the energy efficiency of this Chiller Plant was established as a key contributor to optimizing future energy performance of the Nathan campus.

With the launch of the Chiller Plant West (N80), we move closer to achieving our target set out in the University Strategic Plan for a 50% reduction of carbon emissions as compared to 2010.
