“Node 11”: An interdisciplinary project to develop a tabletop boardgame about designing sustainable cities

Dr Keiran Hardy

Please note that this is an on-going project.

Project Description

The project aim is to design a commercially viable tabletop boardgame which engages and entertains players while educating them about the challenges and trade-offs involved in designing future resilient cities. The game can also be incorporated into co-design toolkits for use in community consultation processes. The project also explores the application of SDGs as a framework for interdisciplinary research, as it is a successful collaboration between researchers in the Griffith Criminology Institute (GCI), Cities Research Institute (CRI) and the Creative Arts Research Institute (CARI).

Project Personnel and Beneficiaries

The project will benefit environmental and planning educators and planning and community consultants.

Outcomes to Date

To date, the team have designed the prototype product. We have also provided a workshop on co-design through ‘Relative Creative’ to a cross disciplinary research audience. Plans to test the prototype are in formation.

Project Significance

The completed game can be used as a ‘serious game’ for urban planners as a tool for use in community consultation. The game can also be used in educational settings to instruct and provoke discussion on matters relating to SDG 11: “Make cities and human settlements inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable”. If all goes according to plan, the game may be enjoyable enough to reach a broader audience, potentially entertaining and educating the game-playing public about sustainable cities.
