Griffith University Art Museum Internship Program – 15 Years

Griffith University Art Museum

Please note that this is an on-going project.

Project Description

2025 marks the 15th anniversary of the Griffith University Art Museum (GUAM) Internship Program! We have mentored almost 60 Griffith students and alumni, helping them to build exciting careers at leading institutions within Australia and overseas. Our graduates have gone on to work as curators, gallerists, registrars, conservators, educators, writers, installers and professional artists.

Open to all Griffith University students and Alumni, the Internship gives a broad introduction to working life at a museum, preparing participants with the knowledge and skills to become job-ready graduates. Our interns work closely with GUAM staff members to undertake daily operations across our Collection and Gallery locations. Working to international standards in museum best practice, and under supervised access to our Collection stores and Gallery facilities, interns gain insights into planning and installing exhibitions, and hands-on museum skills such as preventative conservation, condition reporting, artwork handling, safe storage, contextual writing, cataloguing and research.

Project Personnel and Beneficiaries

The internship program is open to all students and alumni for both WIL and volunteer programs. The program benefits early career arts workers, and artists looking for additional skills and employment opportunities to help them sustain creative practice.

Outcomes to Date

Almost 60 Griffith University students and alumni have graduated from the internship, many of whom have gone on to successful careers in cultural institutions across Australia and internationally thanks to the skills and knowledge taught in the program.

Project Significance

The GUAM Internship program contributes to achieving SDG 4 ‘Quality Education’, ensuring inclusive and equitable quality education is available for all. Through this work-integrated learning (WIL) and volunteer opportunity, GUAM supports Griffith University and the Queensland College of Art and Design (QCAD) to provide world-class education.

The program also contributes by supplying equal access to affordable technical, vocational and higher education (SDG 4.3) and increase the number of people with relevant skills for financial success (SGD 4.4)
