Project Description

The Griffith Tax Clinic provides free tax assistance to unrepresented taxpayers so they know their rights and obligations in complying with Australia’s complex tax system. The Griffith Tax Clinic is a friendly, student-run clinic offering students, staff and community members with advice from Griffith University taxation students under the supervision of experienced tax practitioners.

Outcomes to Date

In 2020 the Tax Clinic was awaded a $100 000 Federal Government Grant in recognition of its important role in providing a community tax service. In its inaugural year, 54 student advisors participated in the Tax Clinic and students answered almost 500 enquiries and held more than 20 community presentations, including local schools. The Griffith Tax Clinic continues to provide an important and popular local service in the Logan and surrounding areas and offers online seminars and educational recordings.

Project Significance

The Tax Clinic provides a free community service for under and unrepresented taxpayers to ensure they are represented fairly and equitably in complying with Australian’s complex tax system. The Clinic services support Griffith students to learn while engageing in community service, encourages industry partnerships through student mentoring, pro bono work or seminar assistance from tax professionals, and provides a free community service.
