Blue Heart Sunshine Coast: Blue Carbon and Blue Co-Benefits Pilot Projec

Fernanda Adame Vivanco

Project Description

The goal is to monitor the restoration of a wetland through tidal inundation of an unused paddock as a pilot project to assess the feasibility of blue carbon projects.

Project Personnel and Beneficiaries

University of the Sunshine Coast, the Sunshine Coast Council, UQ, USC, and Griffith University- a group of managers, environmental scientists and economists are involved in this project.

Outcomes to Date

We have monitored the site before restoration along with three reference sites to asess what is achievable. In 2024 monitor the site will be monitored again after the tidal water floods the site.

Project Significance

Such pilot projects are significant as they demonstrate the benefits of wetland restoration- there are limited projects like this on the ground, and they are perceived as risky.
