Griffith University Art Museum Internship Program – 15 Years

Project Description

2025 marks the 15th anniversary of the Griffith University Art Museum (GUAM) Internship Program! We have mentored almost 60 Griffith University students and alumni, helping them to build exciting careers at leading institutions within Australia and overseas. Our graduates have gone on to work as curators, gallerists, registrars, conservators, educators, writers, installers and professional artists.

Open to all Griffith University students and Alumni, the Internship gives a broad introduction to working life at a museum to prepares interns with the knowledge and skills to apply for work. Our interns work closely with staff members to undertake daily operations across our Collection and Gallery locations. Having supervised access to our Collection storerooms and Gallery facilities, and learn about installing exhibitions, preventative conservation, condition reporting and other hands-on museum skills.

Project Personnel and Beneficiaries

The internship program is open to all students and alumni for both WIL and volunteer programs.

Outcomes to Date

Almost 60 Griffith University students and alumni have graduated from the internship, many of which have gone on to use the skills and knowledge taught in the program to successfully apply for jobs in institutions across Australia and internationally.

Project Significance

The GUAM Internship program contributes to achieving SDG 4 ‘Quality Education’, ensuring inclusive and equitable quality education is available for all. Through this work-integrated learning (WIL) and volunteer opportunity GUAM supports Griffith University and the Queensland College of Art and Design (QCAD) to provide world-class education.

The program also contributes by supplying equal access to affordable technical, vocational and higher education (SDG 4.3) and increase the number of people with relevant skills for financial success (SGD 4.4)
