Griffith University supports the Sustainable Development Goals

Free library membership for all community borrowers

Griffith Library

Please note that this is an on-going project.

Project Description

Previously, members of the public were charged a $55 membership fee to join the library. While the initial idea was to waive the fee under certain circumstances, such as for people experiencing hardship, after discussion with Library Management and the Library Campus Services Coordinators, a decision was made to remove the membership fee completely for public borrowers. This means that library membership is now free for all community members (public, alumni and reciprocal borrowers (ULANZ)).

Project Personnel and Beneficiaries

Members of the public who have no affiliation with Griffith University are now able to register for free library membership and borrow items from our physical collection.

Outcomes to Date

Free library membership for public borrowers took effect on 3 July 2023 and the change is reflected on the library website.

Project Significance

Offering free library membership for public borrowers serves to reduce inequalities and support education of the community by removing financial barriers to information, research, and independent learning.

This activity also encourages further use of our campus libraries by members of the public, which promotes inclusive, welcoming spaces regardless of a person’s status or demographic characteristics.
