Brighter Futures Scholarships – equity and access to education

Joanne Nyland

Please note that this is an on-going project.

Project Description

Supporting students who are facing financial or personal hardship to continue to study, annually hundreds of donors come together to support the Brighter Futures Scholarship.

These scholarships often make a difference between continuing to study and dropping out. in 2021/22 96% of recipients were able to continue their studies or complete their degrees.

Scholarships are $5,000 and are funded through our Annual Appeal, class gift and Staff payroll giving program.

Project Personnel and Beneficiaries

The Brighter Futures Scholarship Program helps students who excel at their studies but are also experiencing financial or personal hardship. Donations help Griffith University provide scholarships for students in need.

Outcomes to Date

Since 2016:
$1,951,000 has been raised
780 scholarships have been funded

Project Significance

Many students who are facing financial or personal difficulties do not complete their studies. These scholarships help them to do so.

A $5,000 scholarship can provide vital relief for students struggling to pay for the essentials of university and daily life, including textbooks, computer equipment, food and rent.

This support allows students to fully focus on their education. It can mean the difference between a student completing their course or deferring, or even halting their studies.

To be eligible for a scholarship, students need to be achieving a high grade point average of at least 5.0 while also demonstrating financial or personal hardship.
