Please note that this is an on-going project.
Project Description
This project is a pilot project aiming to create an interactive VR time-lapse video of a mangrove forest from the perspective of its different animal inhabitants.
It combines science and animation by embodying the imperceptible “aliveness” of a mangrove forest from multiple perspectives to highlight the importance of the ecosystem.
Project Personnel and Beneficiaries
Dr Zeynep Akcay from Griffith Film School and Dr Michael Sievers from GLOW Project are collaborating in the pilot phase of the project. When completed, the project will mainly benefit the conservation efforts of Mangrove Forest, involving a number of international actors, such as World Wildlife Fund or GLOW Project.
Outcomes to Date
The project has recently started, the first outcome, which is a 360film is planned to be finalised in 2023.
Project Significance
Mangrove conservation and restoration is threatened by sea level rise.
This project, sitting in the middle ground between science and experimental animation, aims to create awareness of the richness of the mangrove ecosystem.
By using time-lapse to create a captivating and uncanny spectacle of invisible – or imperceptible – life to the human eye, we will highlight the critical functions that this coastal ecosystem supports (e.g., carbon sequestration). Given the importance of mangroves to biodiversity, we will showcase this process from the point of view of different inhabitants.
