Creative counselling skills training cards: Connecting concepts and practice for Papua New Guinean counsellors

Associate Professor Jane Fowler

Please note that this is an on-going project.

Project Description

The research I led into counselling provision in Papua New Guinea has positively changed the way counselling is practiced in a country that has never had a greater need for skilled and knowledgeable counselling practitioners. Finding that PNG ‘barefoot counsellors’ lacked the basic knowledge and skills needed for effective counselling, I developed a creative solution. I led a team of academics and designers to produce ERA-eligible, evidence-based innovative educational resources. The resources are culturally appealing with photographs, artwork, Tok Pisin quotes, and use of Pacific colours.

Project Personnel and Beneficiaries

Papua New Guinean counselling providers and their clients and, as a result, PNG society.

Outcomes to Date

Our strategy of ‘on-teaching’ has resulted in 400+ counselling providers in PNG workplaces and communities being educated with these resources. Counsellors are more confident in their use of skills, apply theoretical frameworks and ethical codes, and structure their counselling sessions; previously counselling was ‘advice-giving’. Clients report ‘life-changing’ experiences and higher likelihood to continue with counselling. These substantial and significant outcomes will have far-reaching social and community benefits as more counsellors, clients, and PNG society bear the fruit of ongoing education and skilled counselling.

Project Significance

The resources developed are essential for counselling providers, a population that does not benefit from scholarly publication nor has access to web and other resources, and whose reading skills are limited. The results of using these educational resources helps to ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all at all ages (SDG 3) and provides inclusive and equitable quality education and promotes lifelong learning opportunities for all (SDG4).
